WIDER Development Conference 2023: Cutting Methane Emissions Partnership and Opportunities

Reducing methane emissions from the oil & gas industry is a win-win-win for health, development and climate

Thank you to UNU-WIDER and to Norad for the invitation to speak at the UNU-WIDER Development Conference in Oslo, Norway, September 6-8, 2023.. EnergyCC presented how the reduction of methane emissions by addressing the huge global wastage of gas caused by flaring and venting should be immediately prioritised for global emissions objectives. Unlike other climate-change measures, this does not require either new technologies or large financing by governments. Indeed, these solutions can generate significant increases in fiscal revenues and contributions to the UNSDGs – an obvious boon for any lower-income country. Importantly, solutions exist today: combining 1) satellite data, 2) transparency, 3) fiscal and regulation, 4) gas monetization, with public-private collaboration.
